I have at times been disappointed to find that many of our greatest poets, beginning in a clear way in the culture of the renaissance courtier, seem to be competing with one another to discover more and more clever ways to make crude comments about women.
This is true. Children from a very young age rebel against rules that are presented as arbitrary and unrelated to living a fulfilling life. Even kids who are natural rule-followers feel this way if they are given a list of precepts that doesn't seem connected to any greater purpose beyond avoiding punishment.
